Sewell served as project manager in the OIT department at BYU in Provo. Prior to that position, she worked as director of IT Projects & Technology Services at Dixie State University. She has over 20 years of IT management experience including positions at American Samoa Community College, Blue Sky Communications, and Children's Hospital-San Diego.
Originally from the village of Utulei in American Samoa, her parents are Elama Pele and Loretta Tupua. Sewell earned a bachelor’s degree in information systems from BYU–Hawaii and a Master of Science in information systems security from Colorado Technical University. She is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joining in 1996. She and her husband, Gabriel Sewell, are the parents of five adult children.
