Darren Duerden

Darren Duerden is a Professor of Music at BYU–Hawaii, having earned his MM and DM degrees from Florida State University, and his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. At BYUH he directs the steel‐drum band Shaka Steel, the BYU–Hawaii Salsa Orchestra, and teaches a variety of courses ranging from Percussion Methods to Music History. A native of Salt Lake City, Utah, he has performed professionally and with university ensembles across Hawai’i, the mainland United States, and in many parts of the world as well. He performs extensively with the Honolulu Opera Theater, the Honolulu Ballet and performed with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.

Darren previously taught at Holmes Community College in central Mississippi, Mississippi Valley State University, and at Kearns High School in Utah. He is President of the Hawaii Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society and lives in La'ie with his wife Jennifer and children Callie and Bret.
